I have changed the oil many times (the car has done 223,000 miles) and never had a problem resetting the service light using the odometer reset button. However, I changed the oil at 218K and tried to reset the service interval, without success. The display showed the oil can, asked if I wanted to reset and then showed 16,000 miles, all of which BMW timing chains are engineered for the life of the engine and never need maintenance or replaced. To prove that point BMW has always performed several long distance tests on its new engines before they are put on the market.
