Every time that little trading Villager army dies to a bandit or enemy army, the town loses that many "hearths" to replace the villager army.. meaning you have to start all over again. It's really devastating, because if you lose 20 villagers to a bandit group, that's essentially 20 days of lost progress.
All you have to do is locate an enemy general out in the field. Approach their party and speak with them. Ask them to discuss something else and you have the option of bartering for peace. It’s usually only a few thousand, which is much cheaper than fighting it out.

I loaded earlier saves and figures out as long as I stay below this quantity (meaning for you it must be somewhere around 2.5 or 2.6 bn gold) everything runs smoothly.MzWCk2I.
