The Medal of Honor was created during the American Civil War and is the highest military decoration presented by the United States government to a member of its armed forces. The recipient must have distinguished themselves at the risk of their own life above and beyond the call of duty in action against an enemy of the United States.
The US, meanwhile, were reliant upon the Medal of Honor until more awards for gallantry were established in or after 1918, and the ‘Pyramid of Honor’ (or ‘Pyramid of Valor’) was set up to rank them. Beyond that point, the Medal of Honor was more clearly established as the highest ranking, and thereby a clearer equivalent of our VC. All recipients in the database are verified by source material such as official award citations, narratives and/or synopses from individuals or records from the National Archives. The Hall of Valor Project is ongoing. It is a monumental effort to identify the half-million men and women who received the highest U.S. military awards, in addition Murphy's award for the Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. Audie Murphy (20 June 1925 – 28 May 1971) was one of the most decorated United States Army combat soldiers of World War II, serving from 1942 to 1945. He received every American combat award for valor available at the time of his service, [ALM 1] including the Medal of Honor.
Sergeant Major Daniel Joseph Daly (November 11, 1873 – April 27, 1937) was a United States Marine and one of only nineteen men (including seven Marines) to have received the Medal of Honor twice. All Marine double recipients except Daly and Major General Smedley Butler received both Medals of Honor for the same action.
