So I purchased a 2004 WJ with the 4.7 V8 from a couple for a whole $250. They claim they were told it needs a head gasket. I purchased it anyways for $250. Anyways this isn't the first jeep. This actually makes jeep # 6 at the house currently. First with the v8 4.7l. I'm use to the 4.0 or 2.5. Anyways I'm a little stumped. No milky oil.
The 4.7 is notorious for oil coking in the rear cylinders, and NOW, with the garbage additives in gas these days, the funky "orange" caking in the filler "funnel" filler. The 4.7 is a sweet engine, but the rear 4 cylinders run hot, from the design of the cooling jackets, and the location of the oil drainage holes in the block.
1) remove oil filter. 2) slide red tab on backside (just push it from one side or the other until it moves a bit) (My connector just cracked off ) 3) Pinch tail end of connector near the wire and slide off. 4) Use 1-1/16 deep socket ($10 at sears) to loosen/remove old sensor.
2000 WJ 4.7 130k. Ok, so I was sure that my head gasket had gone but I'm questioning it now. I have oil in the coolant, and it looks like the #8 plug has had some coolant getting at it. All of the other plugs and the oil look clean. I just did a compression test, all cylinders were between 105 and 135 PSI.
The OEM recommended engine oil viscosity for the 2001-08 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2007-08 Jeep Commander is listed below: 2001-04 4.7L Above 0 degrees Fahrenheit - SAE 10W-30. Below 100 degrees Fahrenheit - SAE 5W-30. 2005-06 4.7L All Temperatures - SAE 5W-30. 2007-08 4.7L All Temperatures - SAE 5W-20.
